The US Government going to edit Films

there was a good programme on TV last night, i think it was dispatches on channel 4 at 8, and it was on about how our freedoms are being taken away from us, stuff like Tony Blair ignoring the magna carta and a 1000 years of the legal system by removing the 'right to a jury' - anyways, there was a bloke on that used to be chairman of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and he was saying how the US had recently passed a bill that would allow them, before a film was released, have it sent to a special company and RE-EDITED without any input from the backers, producers or Director - to take out any material it thought the US people MAY find offensive. i.e. inflamatory stuff, political, bad language and even sex scenes and violence!!!!!

There's a new republican senator (thats in the running for the presidency in 2008) thats leading the way in getting hollywood and US film industry censored!!!

What?!?!??! is it just me that thinks this is mental?!??!?!?!?

No. It's not just you mate.

The Chinese government have been doing this for years. They've even stopped Google China from allowing citizens to view material on human rights etc.. and try to stop/have stopped production of some films in which the Chinese have been played by Japanese actors.

I was watching 'Escape From New York' last night - and theres a scene at the end when Kurt Russel ruins a speech the president was delivering by destroying a crucial tape with his speech on, and swaps it with some music... making the president look like a fool and essentially looking very non conformist and 'non patriotic' ...

... I couldnt help thinking right at that moment, whether you could put a film out these days and have an ending like that - espcially given the whole 'them and us' atmosphere these days. And with the proposed laws mentioned above .... That would probably end up on the cutting room floor.

Good old blair and bush eh - We dont have those nasty tories who shut the mines and took the kids milk off us, but i guess we have a police state right out of 1984 instead. Wicked.

thats a bit of a generalisation, the removal of right to jury is being looked at because of the huge amount of cases where judgment by jury has become completely innapropriate or a case has become untennable... I completely disagree with 'its not ideal, but its the best we've got'.. bullshit.

reports from cases where the members of the jury have sat doing their knitting throughout the entire jury period with their input being 'he looks guilty' or 'you lot sort it out, I'll just agree' put a very strong case for getting rid of SOME juries.

24 now makes the president look like a dick. I don't think they would have dared do it at the start though just post 9/11.
