yeah man im a fan of all RnB. My dad used to play me loads of Ray Charles and BB King etc. well worth investing in any greatest hits cd's as there a good starting point if your not massively into or new to the artist.
Tended to be more into Soul tbh (Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, bit of Earth, Wind and Fire!!) because I used to be in a band playing that sort of stuff, but loving that whole style so I think I better get the cash out!!
intresting you bring up Dave Pearce. He did the last basement and his show was decent. This isnt a bad starting point for people who dont know much or care much about black music. Pretty much all good harmless tunes.
Be interested to see a tracklist for that show if you got one mate?? He started of DJ'ing hip-hop and underground black music on pirate radio didn't he?? So should know his stuff I suppose.
i love soul to bits, used to listen to the good old Soul sister Blues brother album when i was smaller i play the piano and love all the jazz and sould stuff to play but my teacher never let me really do it much as she was a classical teacher
Ahhhhh....we were well lucky at school we had a new music teacher come in and set up a 'Soul Band' (although we didn't strictly play soul). For the next 3 years I was drumming along to Superstition, R.E.S.P.E.C.T, Walking on Sunshine, Son of a Preacher Man, Mustang Sally, Tears of a Clown (I think??) etc!!! Were good times On the subject of classical teachers though we had one for my music GCSE - he wouldn't let me play the drums and couldn't get it into his head that playing the drum kit did not mean I could play the entire percussion section!! Think I ended up playing the triangle
nice one, i played percussion for a bit,...it was a bit by accident though when i was in 6th form. I said to my form tutor as a joke "yeh i'll help out at the concert, i'm a winner on percussion!!" next thing i knew i was given music scores ans told i was plying the bells, glockenschpiel, triangle and Gong!"!!ha ha ha ha it was the funniest thing ever, i had a week and had no idea how to read percussion music! the gong was the greatest moment of my life!
Glockenspeil (sp??) was the best - my teacher could not get it into his head how someone doing music GCSE couldn't read music!! Pulled a 'C' grade out the bag in the end though Much as it makes me laugh now, being sat playing the odd 'tink' on the triangle wasn't exactly good for my self-esteem
Re: The Basement I'm liking the tracklisting. Can't have a listen 'cos I'm at work but I'll check it out tonight. I'm not a fan of new r'n'b shite that gets airplay all day on Galaxy and litters the charts but old stuff along with soul, northern soul and Motown records early releases were, and still are, top quality. Tarantino uses a lot of this type of music for his film scores instead of relying on new, manufactured, pop shit (like some films). People like The Delfonics, Al Green, Bobby Womack, Brothers Johnson (who Coca Cola also used for one of their adds a year or two ago) also made some quality tunes back then.
