    Should I take the job?

I'm shit at making big decisions so Im asking for ur advice.

Basically, I've been offered a job at my old University in Preston on a 6 month contract (with the possibility of another 4 months after that) designing a web site, doing online research etc for a new International Journalism course that they are starting up. Altho I would like to do proper journalism ideally, I have experience in working on the web too. They approached me for the job, which isnt only very flattering, but also is probably the easiest job I'm ever going to get in terms of not going through an interview process etc. I already know the people I will be working with and the area because I have spent the last four years of my life at Uni there. Preston may not be the best city but it certainly isn't a bad place to live, IMO. I am also aware that, at the present time, it is very hard to find jobs in the media sector.

My main problem is my life is all up here now. I have some fantastic friends, all my family are here and, before I got this offer, I didn't want to move out of the region because I am happy with my life at the moment. I had planned to find a job up here, move out of home but stay in the region.

As I have said, all I've ever wanted to be since I was at school was a journalist because I have always loved and had a talent for writing. This job seems to be more web designing etc rather than journalism based. Altho this does not bother me too much, I am still not 100% sure that this is the job for me. I could wait for a more suitable job to come along that lets me stay up North but, if I'm honest, I'm not sure when that opportunity will come along.

I am not worried abt living away from home or anything as I know I can cope and I loved having my independence while at Uni. The only real problem is the fact that I will have to leave everything I have up here and go to Preston. Most of my mates who were at Uni with me are no longer in Preston so I will only know a few people to start off with. I will see a lot of freshers tho..... ;) :p

Seriously tho, I know that only I can make the final decision but any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers. :)

Lee having moved away from home myself for work and not knowing anyone I would say go for it. It's a great challenge.

It sounds like you need some experience to get you started on your path. This sounds like the ideal opportunity in familiar surroundings.

Preston isn't very far from your mates - I think you should go for it.

    Good luck. :)

Go for it, it's in the "field" you want to work in (therefore potential foot in the door) and it's only a short term contract.. Preston isn't that far away!

    why not do it lee?

its only for 6-10 minths. that really is nothing at all.
plus its experience that will help you get a bit further in the dorr when applying for somewhere up here. and if you already know the people area etc. then i say go for it.

if you didnt know anyone etc. or the area then it would be a different case i reckon

    good luck matey :D

You should defintely go for it, what do you haev to lose?

If you arent happy you can come back home and in the mean time you can still look up North for a job. Its an opportunity in a life time and if you dont take it you may regret it in time to come.

Even if you only stick at it for a short time until you find a job up North the experience will be worth having.

But only you can make the right decision? After all its your life.

    Happy Thinking Hun ;)

worst thing to do is put your life on hold for clubbing friends, clubbers grow up and stop going clubbing - if your someone who can get employment easily - then all means give the job the middle finger - however if ur not in this position I wouldn't be so fats to throw away good chances for your weekend chums.

so true, i didn't think twice about agreeing to goto london.

my friends will still be here for me if/when i come back, there is a time when you have to consider where you want to end up in life and then do something about it.

    take the job. :D

Think about where you want to be in 10 years time and figure on how your decisions NOW will affect that.

I left newcastle, sadly about 15 months ago when i realised there was no money here (at the moment) for anyone in the IT industry as a whole... The more i looked for jobs the more i ended up rounding down my expectations till i was ready to start applying for jobs with sub 15k salaries - hardly something that a university graduate with alot of IT experience should be shooting highly for.

Luckily we moved down here and career wise its been the best thing ive ever done.

End of the day, dont let short term feelings get in the way of long term plans. ;)

bit cheesy... but, its better to regret something you have done than something you havent...

im sortin a move down to manchester next summer so im gonna be in a similar situation, for me this doesnt bother me in the slightest, having had the experience of moving around a lot in my life already, id say go for it..

oppurtunities like this dont come around often and you'll also look a lot more appealling to other employers if your in work and have experience...

end of the day, its hardly a big deal if you go and it doesnt work out.. imo ;)

    good luck! :D

plus Lee, when you do come back you will be arriving to very excited friends dying to see you, as im sure you'll still be on here as much as you are already !

You will get such a buzz, I really enjoyed working away and coming back and like you say, at least you dont have to make friends with unfamiliar faces !

    Ow well done lee:groovy: :groovy:

I say go for it as well, i love meeting new people, going to different places, doing things on my own and having my inderpendence.

You have the self-determination IMO, and you can always come back up here for the odd weekend. Doing this job will push you one step ahead then if no emplayment came your way at the min and you may later regret not taking this oppertunity.

    Good luck anyways Lee xx
