    Property Auctions

Saying as the other house I had started to buy was almost falling to bits, we decided to go to a property auction after viewing a gorgeous house in jesmond.

It is the most nerve wracking thing ever, I had sweaty palms the lot as our lot got closer and closer!!! I even had to make dad bid for me as there were lots of winks and nods etc so was too confusing for me!!

Was amazing to see some absolute shit holes going for loads and have loads of bidders going for it. There were even a group of nuns there

One guy upstairs when we were signing the papers had bought about 5 properties there!!

Nice one! Did you manage to rent the flat out without tidying the bedroom then? ;)

hey well done. I went to one of those auctions once but everything was going for shedloads more than the guide price and it seemed like a really scary environment.
I usually buy my cars from the auction though and I've had some real bargains (and it's really exciting) but not such a massive amount of money being bid.

maybe i should get involved in some auction action too! I spent all of yesterday looking for flats/houses in the toon, so tedious.

amazed that for 200k you still get nothing much bigger than a hotel room in some blocks - it's newcastle not london, i just don't get it.

back on wednesday for another look round, hopefully will find something then.

right, off to watch some dodgy satellite transmission of boro vs barcodes.

    COME ON THE BORO! ;)

If you're a mortgage advisor why would you need to use a different mortgage advisor? Or is that a joke?

if you think its bad now, it was worse 6-12 months ago

tbh the flat market in Newcastle is, well, flat - no matter what the bullshitting agents tell you

on some stuff that was being touted around at £220-£250k a year ago, people are accepting offers in the £180-200k bracket

i think if you can choose about 5 that you like (rather than setting on one), put semi-silly offers in say 10% below asking, you will probably get a bite from one of them

buying a house right now is a very bad idea ... there are some BAD BAD BAD times ahead.

Like vin says, prices on silly neo-slum apartments are on the way DOWN as the muppets who bought them either cant rent them out, or afford the mortgages.

We are long overdue a recession and its areas like the NE that will suffer, big style. If you have a mortgage that stretches you ... then beware.

How much are you looking to spend? My house will be on the market in August. I know it's a while away, but it would be worth the wait! None of this modern flat rubbish with rooms the size of shoe boxes. And it's very central (Summerhill).

i hear both of you, but i'm about a 50% cash buyer so the mortgage isn't a problem - in fact it is cheaper than renting - so for me renting isn't an option, even with a potential capital drop i'm still going to be better off.

plus, if i can afford to, i don't intend on selling the flat when i move on, i see it as the start of my pension.

going to see about 6/7 more tomorrow near the centre for life end of town, hopefully some of these will have the space i'm looking for.

p.s. helen, I was looking to move June time, but if i'm still looking come August i'll take a look!

Just make sure you figure in a potential 50% price drop in anything you buy - its happened before and it will happen again once the hot air is let out of the housing bubble.

Negative equity ruined alot of people in the early nineties.

But, if your a 50% cash buyer, your good to go - just remember that all your buying is a pile of bricks ..... 150-200 grand for a flat in newcastle is just crazy ;)
