    Power Problems!

My PC won't boot up for some reason...

I replaced the PSU thinking that would fix it (it was in need of replacing anyway so no biggie) but when I switch it on nothing happens.. occasionally the case fan will move a bit but that's it...

The LED lights on the motherboard itself are on so power is getting through, but nothing else happens...

The HD sata lead is a bit wonky but I don't think that would affect things.. other than that I'm at a loss and not too happy with having to pay £60 for someone to poke a screwdriver around inside then tell me it's something I could have fixed myself...

    Anyone got any ideas?

have you changed your case or are you using the same one?

If you have, you will have disconnected the case leads between the front of the PC and the motherboard. These need to be plugged into the correct connectors on your board (usually at the bottom of the motherboard at the edge closest the case front).

These case leads look like this:

None of them really matter apart from POWER SW and arguably RESET SW. Make sure they're connected in the correct place (check your motherboard manual to see where they should be connected.) Check your ATX connector (the big power block connector, should be 20 pins) is plugged into your motherboard. Check and see if the additional 4 pin plug is connected to the board as well:

    20-pin plug goes here:

If it still doesn't work it's a tad more worrying.

ive noticed similar results if theres a short, i had a fan connected wrong and the system wouldnt power up and the fans would spin for a second before the safety kicked in and shut it off, disconnect all wires and reconnect them

It's the original case, the prelude to all this was that the machine didn't power down normally and just rebooted after it shut down in windows, so the only way to turn it off was to hit the psu switch, which I'm sure didn't help things...

Neither did binning the motherboard manual a few months ago...

    Doh!

All the connections are sorted as above and like I said the motherboard is taking power...

Yeah still on it - I take it you mean the 4 pin?

I'm thinking about buying a new board and chip as paying 60 quid for someone to poke about inside, tell me it's screwed and then pay for a new peice of kit anyway... how much can I expect to pay for a decent quality CPU and board nowadays?
