    Is my dad daft...

The cd deck in our hifi is on its last legs now so my dad is looking to get a new one but the one he wants is £250. Fair enough, he's always bought good stuff but they never ever play loud music. The whole hifi setup including speakers cost way into the £1k+ region.

I've told him there's no point in paying prices like these when all they do is play cd's at the same volume as you'd listen to a portable radio. Am I right? He says 'But it's a good one...'

I think its habit actually. If somethings good, I'd rather buy it on CD than buy it as a download.

its not just sound quality though, its product durability and reliability.

you get what you pay for in this life, but if it really is just occasionally playing CD's at a normal kind of volume its common sense you dont need tweety woofers or whatever they are called?

Of course it's still worth it! Are you implying that you can only appreciate the quality of music at high volume levels?

with my mam and dad, yes! They play the most music from the mini-hifi in the kitchen. The living room is most commonly used to watch sky.. and my sister is usually the one to hog it.

I don't get people who are into music yet listen to it on a pair of standard issue tinny pc speakers.

I have 2 5.1 setups.. cos i listen to it all the time and have it as loud as i can get away with.

My dad however, listens to most of his in the kitchen. It's rare i see them use the one in the living room that is worth well over a grand yet my dad is wanting to pay another £250 to replace the cd player.

I think he could grab something for around the £150 in the sales and be fine. It just seems like a waste when it's not getting used much.
