    Financial era moan

It seems to me that my Dad and similar professionals from his generation all own there own houses, have been able to make substantial savings whilst doing it all on lower wages on average than this era.

In similar jobs/positions now we get paid higher however escalating debts, rising inflation, unaffordable mortgages and the cost of living is draining that away.

Maybe the generation before went through the same things, Im not sure however It seems to me that to be really comfortable my targets are gonna have to really change/increase for the future.

Anyone else thinking like this? A £30'000 salary nowadays aint gonna get you a comfortable life style it may have done just 10 years ago.

That generation had the benefit of a society that believed in acting together for the common good. So they had grants to go to Uni and free fees so no student debt. They had trades unions which protected their rights at work,
they had a NHS that worked so no private health costs. They had a state which built affordable (council) housing and so the property market wasn't out of control
The downside of that was they paid higher taxes and the rich paid super high taxes.
The country is exactly 4 times richer than it was 50 years ago but all the extra money has gone into peoples own pockets and has been spent on foreign holidays, cars houses (and clubbing)
Margaret Thatcher managed to convince us all that what we were getting was 'choice'

I think a lot of it is to do with reliance on debt. I've still got the last few remnants of student debt left, and I've been working for 2yrs. Back in the day, people either went to uni with a grant, so qualified debt free and walked into a great job on good money, or didn't go to uni but had an extra 3yrs working head start and more than likely got a trade or went into public service (police, nurses etc) on decent money.

These days you graduate with at least £10k debt, walk out of uni with a Pyschology of Field Mice or other worthless degree, struggle to find a decent job, and then after you've bee employed a few years realise that you're still paying off Monday Night £1-a-bottle pissups, and couldn't afford to get on the property ladder even if you weren't.

    no need

aarrhhhhhh the joy's of privatisation (sp) eh the fact is this country is run buy greedy fatcat degenerates for greedy fatcat degenerates and to see the point we only have to look as far as the NHS still state owned as such but useing private nursing staff management company's and such draining valuable resorses paying out for oversea's nurses to come and work here why cos i'tt cost a nurse about 15 grand to go uni to learn her trade then leave to get a jon that pays 15%ish above minimum wage for 16 hrs a day in a dirty hospital with broken machine's whilst the NHS higherarchi get million pound bonuses for lettin the NHS have ONLY a 5 bill deficit

    proper piss take

I agree with all that. Do you not still think that housing & the increasin cost of living means that your gonna need to aim higher (salary wise).

To mix with the likes of Joe Im gonna need to get brown nosing at work. :D

    everyone just spends too much.

Buying a house is still a nightmare, but not impossible if you are on £25+

You'd be able to get max of £88,200 on £18,000 if you have no loans or credit cards but then again that still wouldnt get you too much
