DoNation - What do you think?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/donation/

When i was a kid - there were lots of people trying to get people to carry donor cards, i'm pretty sure i'd picked one up too and filled it in as a naieve nipper - But nowadays you hardly see them anymore or the issue is hardly pushed. Has there been a change in policies over the years?

Anyways - How many people on here actually CARRY one? Do es your partner/family know your wishes when you die? Most people are apathetic and say "yeah - of course i'd do it" - but how many ACTUALLY WOULD allow your organs to be used for transplant if a) you don't carry a card b) don't tell your loved ones/next of kin?

The scale of the problem is massive - and it wouldn't take much to make a real difference.

I have no problem with someone receiving ANY of my organs (if they'd be any use ;) ) but i don't carry a card - this however is changing today

What do people think? don't want someone 'messing with you body' once yer dead or are quite happy about it?

I am more than happy for anyone to have whatever bits of me they want after I die - I won't need them after all.

I'm sure I registered on a central site ages ago, which they can check should anything happen, so I don't need to carry a card. My family are aware that I want to be a donor too.

I used to be really against it. Just the thought of someone pulling parts of your body off when your dead.

But I dunno what changed my mind and now Im totally for it. You are just going to rot anyway and you could technically be killing someone else by keeping ur organs. I carry a card and have done for years now. I also registered with them, so its on record what I want. My family know my wishes and I hope they would follow it thru.

I got Stephen one months ago but I think its still lying on my floor

If it would save someone/many peoples lives of course i'd be happy for my organs to be donated.

For the simple reason if anyone close to me died as a result of not gettin a transplant that was needed it'd be heart breaking and i wouldnt wish that on anyone.

    Got a link? :)

It's a big desicion to make - people have to put a lot of thought into in, discuss it with family, make sure they know your wishes - it's a difficult thing to think about when you're health and loving life - but if u were stuck down today and they wanted your organs tonight - would it happen?

cripes i'm on a mission today :groovy:

I would love to donate any of my organs once i'm dead but only want this declaring once i'm dead. Call me cynical, but don't want to carry a card. My reason being:

How determined would the doctors be if you were fighting to stay alive and they knew you were an organ donor and their is someone waiting for one of your organs?

I know my cynicism may upset a few

a bit paranoid if u ask me... are you suggesting that when someone is admitted to hospital, they check their donor status and adjust patient care accordingly?

    it's your body - there's no pressure!

I'd let them use my organs as doners but i'd want my family or closest friend if no family left to benefit financially from this.
    Organs don't come cheap :D

i would love the chance, once im gone, to give other unfortunate people chance to live with my organsm, however by then they will probably be in no state to be given to anyone

He does have a point, I can see this kind of thing happening in other countries such as India where people sell their organs out of poverty.
