Digital 3D in the North East.

I posted ages ago about the possibility of this happening, but it's now all been confirmed.

At the end of January we are getting a state-of-the-art Digital 3D projector fitted in Screen 9 at Odeon Silverlink, ready to launch with Disney's Bolt on 6th Febuary. This will be the first digital 3D screen in the North East, which is wicked news for anybody into their films. 2009 will see all the big studios rolling out 3D product on a pretty consistent basis, the highlights being the 3D re-release of Toy Story in August, and James Camerons Avatar in December.

As if that wasn't good enough, it's also been confirmed that the new Odeon Metrocentre is going to open with an even more state-of-the-art Digital 3D IMAX screen, one of only 3 in the world and the first in the UK.

You have to wear a pair of "polarised glasses".

They're basically plastic frames with clear polarised lenses, no more red/blue decoding - that's so 1985, haha.

They're pretty good too. If anyone's been to Universal Studios or Kennedy Space Centre it the one's you wear on the T2, Space Journey etc rides.

Install schedule has been moved forward a fortnight.

The 3D projector is now getting installed this Friday through the day and My Bloody Valentine will be playing in 3D from Friday night for the next fortnight.

For those that care this is the kind of 3D technology it will be...

Nice one. Only really wanted to see it for the 3D.

Bolt will probs be good in 3D too. Watched it the other week and, although it's no Wall-E, it's a decent easy watch.

this may be a stupid question right but i kno nothing about 3d screens and stuff but wouldnt it make more sense to install like a giant polarised lenses over the screen or does the 3d thing work because you have 2 eyes and the effects would be different looking through each lens if that make any sense what so ever?

Haha, yeah mate you answered your own question there.

It's all do do with you left and right eye and the way they perceive depth, the glasses are a necessity i'm afraid. The glasses got delivered yesterday - they're black rimmed plastic ones - proper Ronny Corbet banter.

Apparently the red and green effect still occurs, just inside the projector. Instead of 24 frames per second like a normal film in a digital 3D film there are 48 frames per second. There's a rotating disc in the projector that is alternating between red and green 48 times a second and that is helping to create the effect on screen.

It's all really complicated, and i'm currently having to revise all the manuals and stuff as from Friday it's part of the job.

Anyway, got tickets for the first public show on Friday night, so will report back on how the 3D effect looks.
