Can you geordies please explain something to me?

    What does Canny mean?

At first I thought it meant 'very' cos someone has put a thread saying "the board is canny quiet like"

but on another thread it sais "so and so is a canny lad" or something

    How confusing!

I'm no geordie but I can explain.

It can mean one of two things.

1st Canny meaning good, nice, happy.

Example "She is a canny lass".

    2nd Canny meaning quite.

    Example "she is canny pissed".

    Was that correct anyone?

I used to go out with a geordie, and I once asked him, and even he couldn't give me a proper answer

Maybe they use it when they can't think of the proper word! A bit like I use the word 'Thingy'

    :D

That sounds spot on to me! I'm not a Geordie either but coming from Sunderland is close enough.

yeah but that's a different word pronounced the same. tis spelt "cannae"

it always amuses me nee end how many geordie words mean absolutely nothing to non-geordies, but "canny" is deffo the one that seems to confuse more than any other.

Rob's explanation is right, as in Rob's a canny canny lad :p

    Canny also means friendly.

And me and my mates (a Consett thing perhaps) say it on its on when we think something is good. As in replying to something someone says which we think is good, we reply 'canny'

5 mins from your gaff with a case of lager in the
Scots are the bottom of the gene pool, not Geordies

They use canny to mean tight-fisted. Everyone in Scotland is canny

They also use 'ken' to mean 'know' like 'd'ya ken that wee man Jimmy from Leith, I'm going to murrrda him'

    and pronounce 'can't' like can'na e.g. 'I can'na walk, I'm pished as fuk'

Rob was right, but canny can also be used like... "Shaun can seem a bit up himself, but seems canny" Actually, that's the same as "seems like a canny lad" Not exactle 'good, nice' more like amusing, charming, fun... like "he's dodgy as fuck and slaps his wife after ten bottle of brron on a Fri neet, but he's dead canny"
