    Buying an HD TV???

Decided I want an HD TV in time for the next footy season & have started looking around a bit, getting bogged down a bit in the technicalities of it all!!!

Which features do I definitely need/want? And how important are HDMI ports? There's loads of TV's kicking about that don't specify if they've got them or not.

Basically, an quick idiot's guide to HD would be much appreciated! :dunce:

    HDMI - Yes.

Most HD tvs only do 720p, and 1080i (not TRUE HD) - if u want to future proof, get a 1080p - however, these are a minimum 40" and not so cheap.

    Sky HD uses HDMI

I've read a bit about 720p and 1080i/p, as far as I can tell progressive is far better than interlaced but 1080i tv's are bigger for the price.

I think I'm wanting a 37" screen, will suit my room size better than a massive screen

HD won't be that good for the next footy season like.

You have to strain to really notice the difference with SkyHD imo!!

I need a new TV anyway, seems sensible to buy an HD one now. Was planning on getting a PS3 too

The PS3 doesnt really look much better than a PS2 unless you use HDMI. :)

The 42'' LG HD in tesco is a complete bargain at £699. Full 1080p and HDMI!!

If possible have a look at 720p next to 1080p.

Lots of people say they can't tell the difference.

There is also no point in going 1080p unless it's quite a large screen as the pixels are too small to see (basically you won't get any benefit).

Also remember that SkyHD is quite compressed so doesn't look anything like as good as HDDVD/BR content.

That being said I would get 1080p but that's because I use a projector and you can easily see the difference between 720 and 1080 on a screen that big.

i find it difficult to tell the different between 720 and 1080 on my pc screen and thats sitting right near it. There is a difference but is it worth the price?

i don't think it is to be honest.

i'd be more bothered about future proofing. in reality i only buy a new big telly every 5-7 years so buying a 720 one right now seems daft.

Apparently we'll have the bandwith to do true HD broadcasts on a regular line within 20 years.

AFAIK SEL is gonna be the next big thing.. screens will start appearing in the next 3 years.

Have NO idea what that is mind!

having the fa cup final on sky hd and freeview on tvs side by side at work last weekend was a good example of how the above statement is utter twoddle......shame being....sky hd is too big a price for such a little selection of channels.
